The Save Our Bikes team wants to design and build covered bike shelters around campus. Rusting bikes are a growing concern for the large student population, Swamp Rabbit Trail users, and Greenville community who live and visit campus. We want these bike shelters to be not just aesthetically pleasing, but also functional. Click on the links below to find out more about this project.
The Save Our Bikes team consists of Sidney Dills, Lilly Flewellen, Louis McEleveen, Zachary Ashburn, and Laura McComb. They are sponsored by Furman's Physics department and the Shi Center for Sustainability.
Goal: Raise $5000 to build bike shelters and maintenance stands outside Furman's SoHo residences
The repair and maintenance kit would possibly contain a set of bike tools, a tire pump, tire patches, and wire brush for removing rust.
Why have a bike shelter that only protects bikes from weather elements? We want to make the shelter function, by adding a bike repair and maintenace kit to it.
The design of the rack would have to match the nearby buildings. SoHo racks would most likely be built partially out of brick.
The bike shelter has to be designed to keep the bikes from getting wet. Designs so far have experimented with the racks having not only a top but also fully covered sides.
The design and construction of these bike racks would be mostly done by students with the oversight, approval, and cooperation of Physics faculty, facilities services, Housing and Residence Life, and the University as a whole.
Furthermore, we hope that we can design the bike racks using mostly sustainable material. Even with a few funds, we could build at least one bike rack and make a huge difference in the lifetime of bikes parked underneath. Please consider donating to Save Our Bikes.
