Sustainability

More students drive to class in the rain, rather than bike and some have claimed to have to buy a new bike each year due to rust beyond repair. Look for more student opinions here. Neither of those are very sustainable actions. We hope to make our campus healthier by increasing bike usage and decreasing bike waste. We also plan to incorporate sustainable materials into the design of the bike shelters.

iking is iconic at Furman.

For anyone who has visited the campus, it is obvious that bicycle riding is a popular activity. The majority of students own bicycles, but we also are lucky to have Swamp Rabbit Trail going through our campus. A biking and walking trail that connects to the Vinings Apartments has also just recently been built, it can be seen in the picture below.

Rust happens, and it can happen fast when your bike is sitting in the rain day after day. Pictured here is just a picture of one bike parked outside of the science building.

We hope that building shelters will save our bikes from rust and other weathering. We think it would be best to start building shelters outside of resident areas, since those are the areas bicycles are most likely to be parked overnight.

Biking is great exercise and is wonderful for your health, it's also a great way to see the local area. We hope that by building bike shelters, that more people will want to visit campus on a rainy day and even stop for lunch at the Paddock.
